Section 504 for Students

Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that is designed to eliminate disability discrimination in programs and activities that receive federal funds. A school-aged student is a disabled student under Section 504 for purposes of Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) if the student has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.

If you believe you or your student may require reasonable accommodations as outlined under section 504, contact the counselor at your school to discuss an evaluation for 504 services. If eligible, the counselor will work with you to develop a formal "Section 504 Plan". A 504 plan outlines the specific accommodations that are appropriate for each individual student for a given school year. These plans are reviewed each year, and updated as the student matures or his/her needs change.

You may view our handbook electronically. Use the navigation menu 'Section 504 for Students' to the left.

If you would like a copy of our Section 504 handbook, you may ask your school counselor, or contact the Special Programs office directly. A copy can be mailed to your home. Please remember to provide your complete mailing information.
